Former Minister of Defence and senior stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, has announced his retirement from active politics and his resignation from the party, drawing the curtain on a public career spanning more than 40 years.
In a letter dated 14 November 2025 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Ward 1 in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Mohammed stated that his decision followed a period of deep reflection and a sense of fulfilment after decades of service to the nation. Copies of the letter were also sent to the PDP state chairman, the national chairman, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Mohammed, who recently marked his 80th birthday, said the time had come to step aside and allow younger leaders to shape the country’s political future.
“It has been a rare privilege to serve our nation and our party in various capacities,” he wrote. “From my early days in public service to my tenures as Minister of Communications and Minister of Defence, to my service as Acting National Chairman and later Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, I have always sought to contribute to the unity, progress and democratic consolidation of our dear country.”
A towering figure within the PDP during its years in federal power, Mohammed held several strategic positions, including Minister of Communications (1999–2001), Acting National Chairman (2011), Minister of Defence (2011–2012), and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (2015). He also played influential roles in national security reforms, public administration, and party reorganisation throughout the Fourth Republic.
Reflecting on his political journey, he said he had witnessed Nigeria’s moments of “trials and triumphs,” expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to its democratic growth. He extended appreciation to party members, supporters, and associates for their dedication and loyalty over the decades.
Although retiring from partisan politics, Mohammed pledged to remain engaged as a statesman devoted to national unity and good governance.
“I shall continue to play my part as an elder citizen, and my experience will always be available whenever my guidance is required in the interest of our nation,” he noted.
His resignation is expected to reshape internal dynamics within the PDP in Kebbi State, where he has long been regarded as a key influencer, adviser, and mobilisation force. The development comes at a time when the party is working to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
