INEC Dismisses Fake Letter on PDP Meeting, Ekiti Congress Postponement
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday distanced itself from a letter circulating on social media that claimed the commission had taken a position on the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party National Working Committee meeting and the postponement of the Ekiti State Congress and governorship primary.
The document, dated November 10, 2025, had been attributed to the Secretary to the Commission, but INEC said it was a fabrication.
In a statement issued by the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, the commission urged the public to disregard the document, describing it as forged and criminal. She noted that the correspondence did not originate from the Secretary’s office or any official INEC channel.
According to INEC, preliminary checks revealed that the signature of the Secretary was forged by individuals seeking to mislead the public.
The commission warned political parties, the media and the general public against giving any credence to the circulating document, emphasising that it was designed to create confusion.
INEC further said the act amounted to a serious electoral offence and a deliberate attempt to misinform Nigerians, calling on those responsible to desist from such activities in the interest of electoral integrity.
The commission disclosed that it is working with security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those involved.
The controversy follows an earlier letter dated November 5, 2025, issued by PDP officials Abdulrahman Muhammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu before their expulsion from the party. In the letter, they informed INEC of their decision to postpone the PDP Ekiti State congress and governorship primary scheduled for November 8, citing logistical concerns.
However, INEC, in an official response dated November 10 and signed by Secretary Rose Anthony, rejected the notice. The commission explained that the communication did not meet the legal requirement that such notices be jointly signed by the National Chairman and National Secretary, rendering the postponement invalid.
