Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has strongly denied claims linking him to terrorism financing, describing the reports as mischievous, baseless and intended to tarnish his reputation.
Reacting to media publications circulating his name among alleged sponsors of terrorism, Emefiele issued a statement on Saturday, December 6, 2025, firmly rejecting the allegation. He said the claim was “entirely fabricated, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to malign my name, mislead the public, and sow confusion for motives best known only to the publishers and their sponsors.”
He stressed that the seriousness of the nation’s fight against terrorism should not be undermined by sensational or irresponsible reporting, adding that Nigerians deserved factual and responsible journalism rather than “reckless misinformation.”
Emefiele maintained that at no point in his public or private life had he been involved in any conduct linked to terrorism or activities that could jeopardise national security. He further noted that he had never been invited by any security agency for questioning on matters related to terrorism financing.
He said there was no truth whatsoever in the claim, dismissing it as a calculated attempt by “misguided elements” to cause harm to his reputation.
Calling on the public to disregard the report, the former CBN governor urged media organisations to verify information and avoid promoting unsubstantiated allegations. He emphasised the need for responsible journalism grounded in evidence and due diligence.
