Akpabio Expresses Optimism for National Progress in 2026

Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has expressed optimism that 2026 will usher in renewed hope and steady national progress, driven by institutional responsibility, legislative commitment and collective national resolve.

In his New Year message, issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio praised the resilience of Nigerians and highlighted the role of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, in maintaining democratic stability, promoting accountability and advancing national development.

He extended his goodwill to Nigerians as the new year begins, commending their patience, resilience and civic maturity despite prevailing challenges.

The Senate President noted that while the Executive arm continues to implement government policies, the National Assembly remains committed to its constitutional duties of lawmaking, representation and oversight to ensure that governance outcomes align with the aspirations of the people.

According to him, the Senate and the broader legislature will continue to carry out their responsibilities diligently by providing legislative support when necessary, exercising oversight where required and prioritising national unity, economic stability and social justice.

Akpabio expressed cautious optimism that ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure deficits and youth unemployment would produce more tangible results in the year ahead. He stressed that lasting national development depends on strong institutions rather than individual leadership.

He said democracy is strengthened when institutions function effectively and leaders remain accountable, adding that the National Assembly would continue to work towards ensuring that public policies remain people-centred and forward-looking.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Senate President warned against divisive politics and misleading narratives that portray individuals as sole saviours.

He cautioned that history has shown such narratives often fuel division rather than unity, noting that democracy thrives on ideas, responsibility and respect for national cohesion, not inflammatory rhetoric or deception.

Akpabio urged political actors to conduct themselves with restraint and a sense of national duty, assuring that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline and the rule of law.

He reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to constructive engagement with the Executive, Judiciary and other stakeholders in the quest to build a more united, just and prosperous Nigeria where institutions endure beyond individuals.

The Senate President concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain engaged, vigilant and hopeful in the year ahead, urging collective support for democratic institutions in the pursuit of peace, equity and national progress.

He also conveyed New Year wishes on behalf of his family, constituents, the Senate and the entire National Assembly, wishing Nigerians a peaceful celebration and a prosperous 2026.
