The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, with the case adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared on Friday before a Magistrate Court in Sagamu, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, Babaseyi said the court granted an adjournment to enable the police conclude investigations and take necessary procedural steps.
Kayode’s arraignment followed his arrest after the crash that occurred on December 29, 2025, near Danco along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The accident resulted in the deaths of Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British citizen. Both men were members of Anthony Joshua’s training and support team.
Police said Kayode, a long-time member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, sustained minor injuries in the incident and was initially treated at a hospital in Lagos before being transferred to Abeokuta for questioning.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, was allegedly travelling above the permitted speed limit when a tyre burst during an overtaking attempt. The vehicle reportedly crashed into an illegally parked truck loaded with soya beans on the road’s shoulder, leading to a severe impact that damaged the nearside of the SUV.
Ayodele and Ghami were said to have died on the spot, while Joshua and Kayode escaped with minor injuries. Emergency responders at the scene described Joshua’s survival as remarkable.
A police source earlier disclosed that Kayode was expected to face charges related to reckless driving, though the specifics of the charges were not made public during Friday’s court appearance.
Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun state governments confirmed that Joshua had been discharged from Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi after doctors certified him fit to continue his recovery at home. In a joint statement by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Special Adviser on Information, Kayode Akinmade, and Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, it was revealed that Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their respects to the deceased.
The bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were later flown out of Lagos aboard a Turkish Airlines cargo flight to Istanbul, before onward transportation to London for burial arrangements.
Governors Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State expressed appreciation to members of the public for their support and condolences, and also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support during the period. The governors further commended medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism.
The accident occurred at about 11am on December 29, as Joshua and his companions were travelling from Lagos to an undisclosed destination, shortly after arriving in Nigeria from London on a Virgin Atlantic flight.
Police said investigations are ongoing, including efforts to locate the driver of the truck allegedly involved in the crash, who is currently at large. Authorities said the next court sitting on January 20 is expected to provide further clarity on the charges and the outcome of investigations.
