The Rivers State House of Assembly has reversed its earlier decision to resume plenary on January 26, opting instead to reconvene on Thursday in a sudden change of plans.
The House, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, returned to sitting in what observers describe as a dramatic development, coming against the backdrop of renewed political tensions in the state. The situation has been further heightened by the ongoing tour of the state’s 23 local government areas by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The unexpected resumption of plenary was communicated to lawmakers through an internal memo signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, and circulated to all members.
In the memo dated January 5, members were informed that, with the approval of the Speaker and in accordance with Order 4, Rule 3 of the Standing Orders of the Rivers State House of Assembly (1999), the House would reconvene for plenary on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Lawmakers were urged to treat the notice as a matter of priority and attend accordingly.
The sudden change in the Assembly’s schedule has fueled speculation that the lawmakers may be preparing to take decisive action, with reports suggesting that the sitting could be linked to moves to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
While no official confirmation has been issued, the development signals an escalation in the state’s ongoing political crisis, with further developments expected in the coming days.
