Labour Party Open to Obi’s Return If ADC Bid Fails, Says Baba-Ahmed

The Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said the party would welcome back Peter Obi if he does not secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 polls.

Baba-Ahmed made the remark during an interview on Friday, noting that Obi’s return to the Labour Party would be preferable to pursuing what he described as a different political agenda outside the platform they jointly used in the last election.

According to him, Obi would face no resistance if he chose to return to the party. He added that remaining within the Labour Party structure would be a more fitting option should Obi’s bid within the ADC not materialise.

His comments follow Obi’s recent decision to align with an opposition coalition under the ADC, nearly three years after both politicians contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party ticket.

Baba-Ahmed also addressed speculation that he had declared interest in contesting the presidency, dismissing such reports as inaccurate. He said he had not made any formal declaration and only reaffirmed his continued membership of the Labour Party.

He explained that any future political ambition would depend on the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission and official directives from the party calling for expressions of interest.

The former vice-presidential candidate attributed reports suggesting otherwise to what he described as social media sensationalism, which he said often creates misleading narratives that appeal to emotions rather than facts.
