A former Ogun State governor and current Senator for Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has expressed strong confidence that Nigeria is on a steady path to recovery, saying the country has moved past its most difficult economic period under President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Sunday at his annual family Thanksgiving service held at the Abraham Tabernacle in Sagamu, Ogun State, Daniel commended the President’s economic policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, the floating of the naira, and measures aimed at tackling insecurity. According to him, these reforms, though initially painful, are gradually stabilising the nation.
The lawmaker thanked God for preserving the country and praised Tinubu for creating what he described as an enabling environment for progress. He acknowledged that inflation had been high but noted that there were signs of improvement, expressing hope that the new year would bring better fortunes for Nigeria.
Daniel stressed the importance of prayer in addressing national challenges, pointing to the large gathering of over 200 clergymen at the event as evidence that Nigerians remain spiritually united and optimistic about the future.
He also spoke on the growing distrust between politicians and citizens, noting that many Nigerians readily dismiss all politicians as corrupt. While admitting that deceit exists in politics, he insisted that some leaders, including himself, have remained committed to honest and selfless service in the tradition of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The senator highlighted some of his contributions to Ogun State, including providing empowerment tools such as motorcycles, grinding machines, freezers, and sewing machines, as well as facilitating road projects, boreholes, and free eye surgeries for thousands of residents. He pledged to continue supporting development initiatives in the state.
The Thanksgiving service attracted a number of prominent personalities, including Sir Adebukola Kensington, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, Ambassador Sarafadeen Tunji Ishola, Dr Olatokunbo Dosumu-Awolowo, and former PDP governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu.
Other dignitaries in attendance included NADECO leaders Chief Ayo Opadokun and Senator Femi Okurounmu, former Lagos Deputy Governor Femi Pedro, former Minister of State for Health Dr Olorunmbe Mamora, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, and several traditional rulers from across Ogun State.
Speaking separately to journalists, Adebutu urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite current hardships, expressing belief that divine intervention would bring better days ahead as the country prepares for another political season.
