REBUTTAL: False Narratives Cannot Rewrite Gov. Buni’s Record of Leadership and Progress

A widely circulated social media post targeting key political figures in Yobe State has once again highlighted the growing trend of misinformation being dressed as political commentary. The publication, filled with unverified claims and emotional rhetoric, attempts to discredit former Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, Governor Mai Mala Buni, and former Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam Wali. However, a closer and objective assessment shows that these allegations are not only baseless but entirely false.

The claim that Baba Mallam Wali is being imposed on the people outside democratic processes is misleading and incorrect. Nigeria operates a constitutional democracy where party primaries or consensus between stakeholders and general elections determine candidates. No individual, regardless of influence, can override these established procedures and Governor Buni followed through these options carefully.

Equally unfounded is the accusation that Baba Mallam Wali was complicit in any wrongdoing during his tenure as Secretary to the State Government. There is no credible evidence to support such claims. His record in public service reflects administrative discipline, professionalism, and commitment to governance. Attempting to label loyalty to institutional leadership as “blind followership” is a distortion of what effective governance requires—coordination, respect for authority, and policy alignment.

The attacks directed at former Governor Ibrahim Gaidam are particularly misplaced. His tenure is widely regarded as one that provided stability, fiscal responsibility, and foundational development at a time when Yobe faced significant security and economic challenges. His leadership was defined by calm decision-making and strategic governance, earning him enduring respect across the state.

Similarly, the allegations against Governor Mai Mala Buni, especially the claim that he has “destroyed education,” are categorically false. On the contrary, his administration has invested significantly in rebuilding schools, improving teacher capacity, expanding access to education, and supporting students through scholarship programs. His broader governance record—spanning infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and youth development—demonstrates a consistent commitment to the progress of Yobe State.

The suggestion that governance in Yobe is being run for “family and friends” is another claim without evidence. Public administration in the state continues to operate through established institutions, policies, and oversight mechanisms. Such sweeping accusations, when unsupported by facts, only serve to mislead the public and undermine constructive political discourse.

Furthermore, the attempt to discredit leadership based on age or to dismiss individuals as “irrelevant” reflects a misunderstanding of governance. Leadership is measured by capacity, experience, vision, and results—not by age-based sentiments. Yobe’s political history has shown that effective leadership often comes from a blend of experience and inclusiveness, not exclusion.

It is also important to emphasize that the people of Yobe have consistently demonstrated confidence in the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni. This trust is rooted in visible governance outcomes, accessibility, and a leadership style that prioritizes stability and development. Such confidence cannot be manufactured or imposed—it is earned over time.

While democratic engagement encourages diverse opinions and political competition, it must be grounded in truth, evidence, and responsibility. Baseless accusations, sensational language, and deliberate misinformation do not strengthen democracy; they weaken it.

Yobe State deserves informed dialogue, not propaganda. The records of former Governor Gaidam, Governor Buni, and public servants like Baba Mallam Wali remain clear, verifiable, and rooted in service. No amount of social media distortion can rewrite that reality.
