Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Fintiri disclosed the decision during a broadcast on Friday morning at the Government House in Yola, where he addressed cabinet members and other senior government officials.
The development came two days after the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, announced during plenary that 15 lawmakers had resigned their membership of the PDP.
The governor explained that his decision followed what he described as wide consultations with residents and key stakeholders across the state.
According to him, the move was taken in the interest of the state and with the aim of advancing development in Adamawa.
“This decision was reached after wide consultations with the people of Adamawa, who agreed that moving to the APC is the best path forward for our state’s development,” he said.
The governor added that several members of his cabinet, along with state and federal lawmakers from Adamawa, would also be joining him in the new political platform.
The defection follows a recent meeting between the governor and a delegation of the APC led by the party’s North-East Zonal Chairman, Mustapha Salihu, who visited the Government House for a Ramadan Iftar last Saturday.
