APC Governors Rally Behind Tinubu’s Security Overhaul

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s recent restructuring of Nigeria’s security framework, describing the move as timely and necessary for strengthening national stability.

President Tinubu had in October approved significant changes within the upper ranks of the Service Chiefs, a development the Presidency insisted was aimed at injecting fresh strategy into the armed forces rather than responding to any alleged coup plot.

According to the governors, safeguarding citizens’ lives and property remains a central responsibility they intend to reinforce across their respective states. This position followed a two-day strategy session of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) in Lagos, where issues ranging from security coordination to economic reforms and grassroots governance were extensively reviewed.

The resolutions were outlined in a statement titled “APC Governors Back Tinubu On Security Measures, Pledges Complementary Measures,” signed by Gboyega Akosile, media aide to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In the communiqué read by PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Forum noted improved cooperation among security institutions and paid tribute to the sacrifices of security personnel and community volunteers. It added that APC-governed states would intensify efforts to strengthen their local security systems.

The governors also applauded the President’s ongoing reforms in the security sector, reiterating that the protection of lives and property remains a core obligation of government. They emphasised plans to expand community-based security initiatives, enhance intelligence gathering and improve conflict-prevention strategies, while providing support for victims of insecurity and disasters.

On the economy, the Forum acknowledged the pressures citizens are currently facing due to national economic adjustments. Uzodimma stressed that the governors appreciated the resilience of Nigerians during this period, noting that the Forum had resolved to scale up interventions in agriculture, small business support, job creation and social protection programmes for vulnerable groups.

The statement further highlighted the need for sustained infrastructure investment, commending Lagos State for its leadership in urban renewal, transport reform and innovative financing. The governors pledged greater commitment to improving roads, housing, public transport, water systems, digital access and climate-resilient infrastructure, ensuring that development remains inclusive.

Regarding local governance, the Forum maintained that effective administration at the grassroots is essential to achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda. It pledged to deepen reforms aimed at improving accountability and transparency, while strengthening mechanisms for citizen engagement and policy feedback.

Reaffirming their loyalty to the ruling party, the governors commended the APC’s national leadership for promoting internal democracy and party discipline. They concluded by restating their full support for President Tinubu’s agenda and their commitment to delivering tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians across all APC-controlled states.
