Imam Abubakar Abdullahi Of Yelwa Is Dead

Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the Chief Imam of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, has died.

The respected cleric gained national and global prominence in June 2018 when gunmen attacked several communities in Barkin Ladi. During the violence, he opened both his mosque and residence to protect hundreds of Christians, reportedly saving nearly 300 people, even as he faced direct threats to his life.

His courageous action earned him international acclaim, including the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the United States government.

In a condolence message issued on Friday by Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, the Plateau State Government expressed deep sorrow over his passing.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the death of the cleric as a huge loss to his family, his community, and the entire state.

He noted that Imam Abdullahi’s life was marked by dedication to peace, unity, and the protection of the vulnerable, especially women and children.

The governor said the timing of his death was particularly painful, as Plateau State still needed his counsel and moral leadership.

He urged the deceased’s family and the people of Yelwa to find comfort in the fact that the late Imam lived an exemplary life of faith, compassion, and fairness, leaving behind a lasting legacy of harmony and selfless service.
