Jonathan Pledges Deeper Engagement in PDP, NWC Says

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has said former President Goodluck Jonathan has reaffirmed his commitment to the party and promised to take a more active role in its affairs.

Turaki disclosed this after a closed-door meeting between members of the NWC and the former president at his office in Maitama, Abuja, where party-related and national issues were discussed.

The PDP delegation, which included all members of the NWC and some state chairmen, arrived at Jonathan’s office on Tuesday evening.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Turaki said the visit was to formally introduce the current NWC to the former president and brief him on the activities of the committee since it assumed office following the party’s National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, last November.

He said the committee updated Jonathan on the state of the party, its challenges and prospects, while also seeking his support, guidance and counsel.

According to Turaki, the former president assured the delegation that he remained an active, card-carrying member of the PDP and would be more involved in the party’s activities going forward.

“He made it clear that PDP has done everything that can be done for him as an individual and that he still feels a strong sense of obligation to the party,” Turaki said.

He described Jonathan’s comments as reassuring and encouraging, especially as the party prepares for off-season elections in Ekiti and Osun states later this year, as well as the 2027 general election.

Turaki maintained that the PDP remained the most viable platform for electoral success in Nigeria, describing it as the country’s leading opposition party.

Addressing concerns over the recognition of the PDP’s governorship candidate for the Ekiti State election, Turaki said there was no issue with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He explained that the party duly notified INEC of its primary election, which the commission monitored and documented in line with established procedures.
