Obasanjo Makes Public Fayose’s “Thank You” Text, Says Message Reveals the Former Governor’s True Character

Obasanjo Makes Public Fayose’s “Thank You” Text, Says Message Reveals the Former Governor’s True Character

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday released the controversial “Thank You” message he said he received from former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose following his appearance at Fayose’s 65th birthday celebration in Lagos last week.

The text, which Obasanjo described as insulting and abusive, was circulated to journalists in Abeokuta through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.

In the message, Fayose thanked Obasanjo for attending the event but criticised what he termed the former president’s “irresponsible comments,” adding that he deliberately refrained from responding during the ceremony “to show the world the difference between a sane man and a mad man.” He also asked Obasanjo to return the money he allegedly sent to support the former president’s attendance.

Part of the message read: “Dear Baba Obasanjo, I trust this meets you well. Your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate it, except for your very irresponsible comments at your age. You went so low, but I am not surprised because someone once said you are supposed to be kept away in the zoo. Sincerely, that’s where you belong… It is also obvious that you have lost your sanity—or should I say, this is the heightened stage of dementia… Lastly, I shall appreciate it if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received it.”

Responding, Obasanjo said the message only confirmed Fayose’s nature, adding that the money had already been returned through the same person who brought it. “Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo, who brought it, in the same bag as he delivered it, unopened by me,” Obasanjo replied.

Speaking at the birthday event, Obasanjo had recalled a history of verbal attacks from Fayose, noting that although the former governor had sought forgiveness multiple times, he continued to act without remorse. He added that Fayose did not initially invite him directly to the event, instead sending former Minister Osita Chidoka before later visiting personally.

Obasanjo recounted advising Fayose during his governorship against investing in government-funded poultry projects, describing the initiative as fraudulent and ultimately unsuccessful. He urged the former governor to embrace humility, seek forgiveness from those he had wronged, and uphold integrity going forward.

A video circulating online shows Obasanjo telling Fayose that while he considers him a “political child,” he is “not among the best,” insisting that lessons from their past interactions should not be ignored.
