PDP leadership visits Obasanjo amid party challenges

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, on Saturday led a delegation of party leaders to the residence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Members of the delegation included former Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu; the PDP Deputy National Chairman, Taofeek Arapaja; former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, as well as other senior party figures.

As of the time of filing this report, the specific purpose of the visit could not be officially confirmed. However, the meeting comes against the backdrop of ongoing internal tensions within the opposition party and a wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP has in recent weeks faced significant political setbacks, including the defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who cited the party’s inability to safeguard his political interests. Similarly, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has also resigned from the PDP and joined the Accord Party, where he has reportedly secured the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the August 2026 election in the state.

The visit to Obasanjo, a former PDP leader and influential political figure, is seen by observers as part of efforts by the party’s leadership to navigate its current challenges and reposition ahead of future electoral contests.
