Political stakeholders in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State have restated their allegiance to former governor and senator, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, while urging him to guide them into the All Progressives Congress if he chooses to defect.
The position was reached at a meeting held on Sunday, attended by councillors, ward chairmen, elders and members of the Kwankwasiyya movement in the area.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Abdullahi Rogo, a governor’s aide, said participants reviewed recent political developments and their potential impact on Kano State. He explained that the stakeholders unanimously agreed to remain loyal to Kwankwaso and to follow his political direction.
According to him, supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Rogo were advised to remain peaceful and law-abiding amid ongoing political realignments. He added that the group reaffirmed its commitment to the movement’s principles, stressing discipline, unity and respect for leadership.
Kwankwaso, who came fourth in the 2023 presidential election, had in September indicated openness to an alliance with the APC ahead of the 2027 polls, provided certain conditions were met. He had said any agreement must protect the interests of the New Nigeria Peoples Party and the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Meanwhile, political activities surrounding a possible realignment intensified following the circulation of an audio message allegedly featuring the spokesperson of the Association of Local Government Chairmen in Kano State and chairman of Dala Local Government Area, Surajo Imam. In the message, council chairmen were directed to mobilise NNPP stakeholders to call on Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to join the APC.
Attempts to get official reactions from Governor Yusuf, his deputy and the NNPP leadership were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
However, sources close to the governor and within the APC claimed that plans for his defection were at an advanced stage, with a formal announcement expected soon. One APC official said preparations were ongoing to receive the governor, adding that a declaration could be made during a forthcoming State Executive Council meeting.
The reported move has reportedly deepened internal divisions within the NNPP in Kano State, particularly between Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso, who is said to oppose the defection over concerns it could weaken the party’s structure.
Despite this, several NNPP members are said to be supporting the governor’s decision, citing political realignment and the perceived benefits of aligning with the ruling party at the federal level. The situation has continued to generate mixed reactions among party supporters across the state.
