Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has formally registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), sealing his move to the ruling party.
The governor completed the registration process on Sunday at the Government House in Jalingo, where he was enrolled by officials of the APC Hospital Ward and issued a membership card.
Addressing party members after the exercise, Kefas explained that although he had earlier postponed his planned public reception into the APC, initially scheduled for November 19, the registration was necessary to enable him to effectively participate in party activities at the state level.
He recalled that the official ceremony was suspended as a mark of solidarity with families affected by the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, but noted that ward-level registration remained a mandatory requirement regardless of the ceremony.
“I have already written to the party at the ward level, and today’s registration is a necessary step to meet the basic requirements,” the governor said, while appreciating ward executives and representatives of the APC state working committee present at the event.
Kefas said his decision to align with the APC was taken in the broader interest of governance and political stability in Taraba State, adding that the move would enhance cooperation and strengthen the party’s structure across the state.
He disclosed that a new date for his official defection ceremony would be announced in due course.
The governor’s registration comes against the backdrop of shifting political alliances in Taraba, as key political figures reposition ahead of future elections. In November, several members of the state executive council, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Izito Benzena, and 14 lawmakers of the Taraba State House of Assembly also defected to the APC.
