Tinubu Hails Senate for Quick Confirmation of Defence Minister

President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Senate for promptly confirming retired General Christopher Musa as the new Minister of Defence, describing the move as both timely and essential for Nigeria’s security landscape.

In a message posted on his X handle on Thursday, the President noted that he had sent Musa’s name to the Senate only two days earlier. He praised the former Chief of Defence Staff as a dedicated professional whose experience would be crucial in confronting the nation’s security challenges.

Tinubu wrote that the confirmation came “at a critical juncture” for the country, expressing confidence in Musa’s capacity to strengthen national defence.

The Senate confirmed Musa after a prolonged five-hour screening on Wednesday. Lawmakers used the session to grill him on recent security incidents, including the withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State shortly before the November 17 abduction of schoolgirls.

Musa assured senators that he would launch a full investigation into the withdrawal as soon as he assumed office. He also vowed to examine the killing of Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba in Borno State and other attacks targeting senior military personnel.

His appointment comes after the resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down reportedly due to health concerns.
