Governors from both the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress gathered in Yola, Adamawa State, on Saturday for the formal unveiling of the new Margi national attire.
The Margi people, the ethnic group of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, are found in parts of Borno State and across the border in Cameroon.
At the ceremony, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, praised Fintiri as “a bridge builder across the River Niger,” stressing the importance of cultural identity. According to him, unity across religious and ethnic lines remains central to the growth of Nigeria’s democracy.
“Unity brings peace, and peace brings development,” he said. “It is important for politicians to encourage peace by doing what is right and lawful.”
He added that leaders must prioritise the welfare of citizens, noting that “democracy cannot flourish without the people.”
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also commended Fintiri for what he described as impactful and people-oriented governance. He urged residents of Adamawa State to support their governor beyond party affiliations and expressed optimism that Nigeria’s democratic institutions would strengthen under quality leadership.
Representing Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur highlighted the need for unity and peace as prerequisites for development and job creation. He encouraged Nigerians to “unite and fight the outside enemy,” and urged Fintiri to continue his inclusive leadership.
Governor Fintiri, in his remarks, said a people’s identity remains central to their existence.
“People without memory are people without meaning,” he stated. “The Margi people have endured not because we are many but because we are united. Our faith is strong, our dignity firm, and our hearts loyal to peace.”
He added that the newly unveiled attire is not merely cultural clothing but a symbol of resilience.
“It is simple, beautiful, symbolic. More than a garment, it is a declaration that culture is not fashion, and tradition is not weakness.”
Among the dignitaries present were Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, PDP National Chairman Saminu Turaki, and several senior party officials.
